The compression helps but all of this could be avoided by using a different approach to defining our styling. If you find some fabric-core mixins are missing, consider adding them to the @fluentui/style-utilities (@uifabric/styling) if they are highly reusable. However keep in mind that the initial page load bundle size WILL be affected, so do this sparingly only for very common things. At the same time, if you’re a designer, there’s a bunch of design-oriented discourse on those same pages where we have code.

UI kit organization

Within components, smaller spacers are used to ensure a strong implied relationship between each element while also guaranteeing they are perceivable and distinct. After installing the Fluent UI Android library, import it to access Fluent components. After installing the Fluent UI Apple library, import it to access Fluent components. To install Fluent UI Apple using CocoaPods, specify Fluent UI in your Podfile. With this shared system, we become more open by design, more intentional about cross-team collaboration, more efficient — doing more with less — together.

In addition, all static classnames embedded within the tsx file inside of the css helper function calls can now move into the styles file. Basic conversion just means copying styles from scss into ts, making prop names camelCased instead of kebab-cased, and stringifying everything except for pixel values. Use space in layouts to direct the eye to areas of high importance and guide people to what they’ll need to see next. Elements in a design that are in close proximity are seen as being meaningfully related. As more space is added between elements, their perceived relationship weakens.

Using Pseudo Elements

To get the building blocks for crafting Windows experiences, use WinUI. These components incorporate Fluent’s design language, so you can be confident you’re building great experiences within the Fluent ecosystem. Modular grids have both vertical columns and horizontal rows which intersect and create a matrix of cells, or modules. These modules provide additional layout guidelines as single units or as larger blocks when combined. Starting at version 0.0.12, applications cal use individual modules as needed.

Fluent 2 boasts sweeping changes across-the-board to ensure frictionless communication throughout the system. We improved on the solid foundations from Fluent 1 and injected innovative additions. All to empower makers at every angle of the system to drive toward a single purpose. One Microsoft across the products we offer, the services we provide, and the communities we make. Fluent becomes the best version of itself when there is clarity around what it is, what it could be, and why that’s important. Today, we aspire to make Fluent a collective, open design system that connects us, inspiring and influencing everything we create.

Responsive design uses just one layout where the content is fluid and can adapt to changing format size. This design technique uses media queries to inspect a given device’s characteristics and renders content accordingly. Responsive design allows you to build a feature one time and expect it to work across all screen sizes. Baseline grids consist of dense horizontal rows that provide alignment and spacing guidelines for text. Aligning baselines to a specific absolute grid establishes a vertical rhythm — a pattern that’s easier for the human brain to scan. Baseline grids are especially useful with content that spans multiple columns.

Follow these instructions to build and output an AAR file from the FluentUI modules, import the module(s) to your project, and add it as a dependency. If you're having trouble generating an AAR file for the module, make sure you select it and run e.g "Make Module 'fluentui_drawer'" from the Build menu. To manually install Fluent UI Android into an existing Xcode project, download the latest changes from the Fluent UI Android repository. Modularized FluentUI manual installation involves building individual AAR files of required modules. With each release of Fluent UI Android, we align more components to the Fluent 2 design language.

Some components have dependencies you will need to manually add to your app if you are using this library as an AAR artifact because these dependencies aren’t included in the output. Double check that these library versions correspond to the latest versions we implement in the FluentUI build.gradle. To install FluentUI using SwiftUI, specify fluentui-apple as a dependency in your Xcode project or Package.swift file.

As a 10-year design veteran at the company, I’m excited to share my perspective on how we got here and where we’re heading. Enable the Fluent 2 UI kits from the Libraries dialog in the Assets panel.

Move fluidly from design to development, between apps, and across platforms. Rising to this challenge will take a lot of time and effort, and we all have day jobs in specific products. Over time it can bring our culture, our business, our technology, and our experiences together. We’re taking a few pages from our engineering partners’ playbooks and looking for ways to work more openly and collaboratively. Shared tools and communication are an important part of that.

To ensure the UI kits are always available in your drafts, automatically enable them in Account settings. Your experiences should consider, learn, and reflect a range of perspectives and abilities for the benefit of all. Less visual clutter and noise keeps people centered, calm, and confident.

For example, the BottomSheet component is in the fluentui_drawer module. To use the BottomSheet without taking a dependency on other modules, add the fluentui_drawer module to build.gradle. Fluent’s cohesive design language is carried through each platform-specific Fluent UI library to ensure you can build the same great experiences across one platform or across them all. Fluent and its design identity are meant to convey a specific moment in time. Fluent isn’t a product — the experiences we make and evolve to empower our users are the product.
